Stocks tumbled Friday on worries the U.S. economy could be cracking under the weight of high interest rates meant to whip inflation. The S&P 500 fell 1.8% Friday.

The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF sank 4.2% toward a nine-week low, to put it on track for its worst day since it shed 5.2% on Sept. 13 2022. Of the ETF's 52 equity components, 50 are losing ground.

By the closing bell, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 612 points, or 1.5%, to finish at 39,737. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite tumbled 2.4% to 16,776, while the broader S&P 500 fell 1.8% to close at 5,346.
