Parts of the Upper Peninsula could get another foot of snow or more through Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

From ski towns to U.P. snowmobile areas, this holiday weekend snow is making lots of people excited for winter.

Northern Michigan is in the middle of a winter storm that started Friday and will bring a large amount of snow to the region into Monday. The lake effect snow bands were expected to bring more than a foot of snow to some parts the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan,

Areas of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are expected to get more than a foot of snow as a winter storm blasts that part of the state Friday and into the weekend. The region is under a winter storm warning until 7 p.m. Sunday.

Upper Peninsula: Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for big chunks of the U.P., both on the west side from Iron Mountain to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and on the east side from just east of Marquette and stretching over to the Soo. NWS forecasters are calling this a “long-duration lake-effect” event.

Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are expected to see another foot of snow Saturday through Monday. Follow the live weather radar.

The first big snow of the season threatened to bury towns in New York along lakes Erie and Ontario during a hectic holiday travel and shopping weekend.

Although lake-effect snow will taper throughout the weekend, the below-freezing temperatures aren't going anywhere.
