As Kansas economic development success creates more electricity demand, and with plans to retire a coal power plant, Evergy is adding new gas plants.

Evergy, the major electricity provider across parts of Kansas and Missouri, announced Monday it will spend $2 billion to build two natural gas power plants in Kansas.

Gov. Laura Kelly said the construction of the plants would create 500 construction jobs and 165 permanent jobs. She said the plants would ensure reliable energy in emergencies and during hot summer days.

The utility provider will open two 705-megawatt natural gas plants in south central Kansas by the end of 2030. Evergy Inc. announced on Monday that it plans to build two natural gas power plants in Kansas by the end of 2030.

One plant will be located south of Hutchinson in Reno County, and the other will be built in northwest Sumner County. The plant in Sumner County will start providing electricity in 2029, and the plant in Reno County will follow a year later.
