Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is set to celebrate Thanksgiving in space with ‘smoked turkey, mashed potatoes’. Thanksgiving is observed every year in the US on the fourth Thursday of November to honour the blessings and harvest of the year.

Sunita Williams noted that Nasa has prepared a Thanksgiving-inspired menu to ensure they can celebrate the occasion meaningfully.

NASA has a long tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving in space. In 2024, astronauts Barry Wilmore and Donald Pettit will mark their third Thanksgiving aboard the ISS. NASA highlighted the tradition of sharing festive meals, with similar dishes served on past missions, such as smoked turkey, yams, and cranapple dessert, which Pettit enjoyed in 2008.
