Mary Simon, the first partly indigenous person to serve as Canada’s governor general, just stripped Buffy Sainte-Marie of her appointment to the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in the Great White North.

“Notice is hereby given that the appointment of Buffy Sainte-Marie to the Order of Canada was terminated by Ordinance signed by the Governor General on January 3, 2025,” a Feb. 8 notice in the Canada Gazette, the federal government’s official publication, stated.

Buffy Sainte-Marie has had her Order of Canada honor terminated after an investigation found she is not Indigenous as she has long claimed.
