When Detroit voters head to the poll on Tuesday, they're choosing between City Council President Mary Sheffield and Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr.
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield will become the first woman mayor of the city after handily defeating Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. in Tuesday’s general election.
New numbers reveal that more than half of all children living in the city of Detroit have fallen below the poverty line. According to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau in September, 51% of children in 2024 in Detroit were living in poverty.
With 49% of the vote in, Sheffield defeated the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr., 78% to 22%. She’ll succeed Mayor Mike Duggan, who has led the city for nearly 12 years. Duggan endorsed Sheffield in August, saying she’ll “take Detroit’s recovery farther.”
The Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. is running for Detroit mayor, using his experience as a church leader and drive as a child who lived through poverty.
