Scientists discovered that the asteroid causing the mass extinction 66 million years ago came from a rare C-type asteroid beyond Jupiter, ruling out alternative origins like volcanic activity or comets.

Dinosaurs certainly didn’t benefit from the Chicxulub asteroid impact, but that was a wholly different story for the ancestors of today’s ants. In fact, the climatic upheaval that rocked Earth 66 million years ago may be the major reason some of the insect species learned to farm millions of years before humans even evolved.

The event that wiped out the dinosaurs wasn't all bad. The low-light environment caused by the meteor impact some 66 million years ago favored the spread of fungi that feed on organic matter, which was abundant at the time as plants and animals were dying in droves.
