US weekly jobless claims fall as hurricane distortions fade
Claims surged early in the month as Hurricane Helene disrupted economic activity the Southeast and remained elevated through the middle of the month after Hurricane Milton lashed Florida. Filings have also been boosted by striking factory workers at Boeing BA.N, which has forced the planemaker to implement rolling furloughs.
Initial jobless claims fell by 12,000 to 216,000 in the week ending Oct. 26, compared with economists’ expectations that claims would rise to 230,000.
Fewer Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week as layoffs remained at historically healthy levels despite elevated interest rates.
