Ukraine's Western allies rallied around the war-torn country on Saturday as they pushed to revise a U.S. peace plan seen as favoring Moscow despite its all-out invasion of its neighbor. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed Ukrainians "will always defend" their home.

President Trump said that he wants an answer from President Volodymyr Zelensky on his 28-point Ukraine plan by Thursday, but says an extension is possible to finalize terms.

NATO fighter jets were scrambled and ground-based air defense systems put on high alert in Poland and Romania during an overnight Russian attack on Ukraine.

The summit, the first to be held in Africa, opened on Saturday with EU leaders and their counterparts from leading and emerging economies coming together as Washington's proposed peace plan for Ukraine loomed large on the sidelines.

European leaders are hoping to bolster the controversial plan, which Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy said was forcing his country to choose between "dignity" and a "key partner."

While the U.S. has taken part in previous iterations of the military exercise, this year's U.S. footprint was smaller as allied nations are pressed by the Trump administration to put more into European defense.
