TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - On Thanksgiving, the community showed up for the annual Turkey Trot! The run/walk race happens every Thanksgiving to raise money for the hungry. Runners started bright and early at nine in the morning. Participants brought money and canned goods for local soup kitchens and food pantries.

Thanksgiving got off to a running start in Terre Haute with the Turkey Trot. This year marks the eleventh trot in the city, and the runners lined the streets downtown near Hulman Center. All race proceeds and canned foods will go to local soup kitchens and food pantries.

Around the Miami Valley, a notable precursor to Thanksgiving is the turkey trot. The annual running events have become a signifier for the holiday, with many across the Miami Valley partaking as a warmup ahead of good eats.
