Moviegoers soared from Oz to the Colosseum over the weekend as millions around the world flocked to see “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” in theaters.

Wicked” and “Gladiator II” both drew less in Thursday previews than their “Barbenheimer” counterparts, but are still expected to help the fall box office.

Tom Nunan, the co-head of the Producers Program at the Graduate School of Theater, Film and TV at UCLA, told The New York Times in an email that “’Glicked’ may not be ‘Barbenheimer,’” but that it’s still something to celebrate.

Wicked” and “Gladiator II” both open Friday, and some fans hope to rekindle the excitement that greeted last year’s simultaneous openings of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
