California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday that the Golden State will move forward with a special election in early November to place its own redistricting plan on a ballot measure before voters.

Leaders in both red and blue states are considering whether to redraw their own congressional districts to gain a partisan advantage ahead of next year's midterms.

Texas House Democrats who have left the state to block a vote on redistricting were hosted by California leaders on Friday. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and other prominent California Democratic leaders spoke at a press event along with the Texas lawmakers.
