The first child case of avian influenza (H5N1) was detected in California this week, according to the CDC, which is conducting an investigation into the case, including contact and exposure tracing

State health officials confirmed Sunday that H5N1 bird flu virus was detected in a retail sample of raw milk from the Fresno-based Raw Farm dairy. The sample was collected by officials with the Santa Clara County public health office.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday confirmed the country's first case of H5N1 bird flu infection in a child, who experienced mild symptoms and is recovering from their illness.
