Maura Healey visited Nibi the beaver at Newhouse Wildlife Rescue after announcing that the beaver could stay at the rescue center she has known since she was a baby.

The state issued a permit Thursday to Newhouse Wildlife Rescue for Nibi to remain at the rehabilitation facility and serve as an educational animal.

Nibi, a two-year-old beaver whose journey has captured the attention of Americans, will be allowed to stay at a wildlife rescue centre after Massachusetts's governor intervened in the matter. Nibi - who was raised in captivity - became the subject of a legal case over whether she would have to be released into the wild or could remain at the Newhouse Wildlife Rescue.

For some time, there was a question of whether a two-year-old beaver would be allowed stay with the rescuers she has known since she was a baby or released into the wild. That question has been resolved.
