Meta laid off workers at Instagram, WhatsApp, Reality Labs and in other parts of the company Wednesday in a restructuring of specific groups of workers. The move is not a company-wide downsizing, according to Meta.

Meta is conducting targeted layoffs as part of an internal reorganization, including in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs.

Tech giant Meta announced layoffs this week at its Instagram, WhatsApp and Reality Labs units. Meta said the cuts were made Wednesday to keep the company competitive in the long term.

Meta spokesperson Dave Arnold said some teams were making changes to align with the company's long-term strategic goals and location strategy.

The company previously laid off 11,000 employees in 2022 and announced cuts of an additional 10,000 in 2023 under CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Meta says it has laid off some employees, including staff at WhatsApp And Instagram, to realign its resources with its “strategic goals.”

This for instance will involve relocating some of the teams to different places and other employees to new departments, a Meta spokesperson said, adding that the company would indeed look for new positions to place the employees who have been made redundant.
