台灣學童近視問題嚴重，盛行率明顯高於全球平均。根據相關調查，小學一年級學童近視率已達 19.8%，到小學六年級升至 70.6%，國中三年級更接近九成（89.3%）。中華民國眼科醫學會理事長王一中醫師指出，多項研究顯示，近視發生年齡愈早、進展速度愈快，未來演變為高度近視及相關眼疾的風險也隨之提高，但若能及早介入控制，則有助於降低長期視力危害。
