MPs will vote today on one of the most significant and morally complex pieces of legislation to come before Parliament in years. Kim Leadbeater’s Private Members’ Bill would, if passed, see the legalisation of assisted dying in England and Wales.

Former Prime Minister Lord David Cameron has backed moves to legalise assisted dying for terminally ill adults. In an op-ed in the Times, Lord Cameron said that while he had opposed moves to legalise assisted dying in the past, he believed the current proposal was "not about ending life, it is about shortening death".

Under the proposed legislation, only those over 18 years old in England and Wales and who are expected to die within six months can request assisted dying. They must have the mental capacity to make a choice about the end of their life and will be required to make two separate declarations about their wish to die.
