One person is dead and five others were injured in a gas explosion and fire at a mobile home in Avondale Monday morning, according to Jefferson Parish authorities. Crews with the Avondale Volunteer Fire Company are on scene in the 500 block of Avondale Garden Road where the explosion occurred just before 6:30 a.m.

A gas explosion at an Avondale home killed an 87-year-old woman and injured five others, including two children.

According to Jefferson Parish Public Information Officer Gretchen Hirt, at 5 a.m., a cement truck reportedly backed over a gas line in the 500 block of Avondale Garden Road causing a leak. ATMOS officials and Jefferson Parish firefighters were on the scene around 7:50 a.
