U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visits Asheville's River Arts District with Governor Roy Cooper as the area continues to recover from Helene.

The Transportation Secretary will join federal and local officials for a ceremony on Tuesday that involves a groundbreaking of the construction projects needed before Amtrak service can restart on the Gulf Coast.

U.S. Secretary of Pete Buttigieg traveled to East Tennessee Thursday to see the flooding damage on I-40 caused by Hurricane Helene. When the storm struck the region late last month, a part of I-40 near the Tennessee-North Carolina border washed away into the Pigeon River.

Sections of I-40 and I-26 have been closed for weeks following severe flooding caused by Helene and on Oct. 17 U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg was in east tennessee to assess the damage.
