As was the case for Princess Diana, who absolutely despised spending Christmas with the royal family. According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, who wrote Diana: Her True Story, the late princess developed contempt for the traditional royal holiday celebrations during her first Sandringham Christmas in 1981.

Harry and Meghan, however, were already planning to spend the holidays in Montecito, California, where they live with their two kids, Archie and Lilibet. The Sussexes intend to keep their celebrations low-key at home with just their immediate family and Markle's mother, Doria Ragland, according to Closer.

Since stepping down from their royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan have routinely been cut from royal events. The couple did not receive an invite to Trooping the Color, an annual celebration of the reigning monarch’s birthday, for the second time in a row this year, per Harper’s Bazaar.

As relations remained strained between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, and brother Prince William, he and Meghan Markle were not invited to Christmas at Sandringham, where the royal family typically spends the holiday.

The last time the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent Christmas at Sandringham was in 2018, the year they tied the knot in the UK.
