The U.N. is pushing for a plan to split Western Sahara as a possible solution to the long-standing conflict in the region.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.N. envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, has floated the idea of dividing the territory between Morocco and the Polisario front as a solution to the near five-decades-old dispute, according to remarks seen by Reuters.

The U.N. envoy to Western Sahara is suggesting that dividing the territory between Morocco and the pro-independence Polisario Front could be one way to settle the decades-long conflict.

In a closed U.N. Security Council briefing, de Mistura proposed partition, with the southern part becoming independent and the rest integrated into Morocco under internationally recognized sovereignty.
