NOAA has released its seasonal outlook for the 2024-25 winter months, which predicts the U.S. will slowly transition into a La Niña pattern.

Depending on where you live in the U.S., this winter could bring a mix of snow and rain or unseasonably warm weather, according to climate experts.

Seattle's winter forecast is shaping up to be chilly and wet, driven by weak La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific. Why it matters: La Niña winters typically bring colder temperatures and increased snowfall to the Pacific Northwest.

Following a record mild winter last year, Massachusetts may be in for another relatively mild but more snowy winter, as a likely La Nina system takes shape in the coming months, according to early forecasts.

A La Niña climate pattern is expected to influence winter weather across much of the country this year. For Albany it will likely be warmer than normal — again.

La Niña conditions are expected to dominate across the United States, resulting in above-average temperatures across the southern states.

The temperature outlook is forecasting a 50-60 percent probability that southern Alabama will have warmer-than-average temperatures over the winter months. Central and most of north Alabama have slightly lower but still decent odds of a warmer winter — 40 to 50 percent, according to the outlook. (The temperature outlook is at the top of this post.)
