It sounds rather affected (to me) to speak of "making" photos or photographs, even if there is a great deal of after-shoot image manipulation. You take a photo (graph) and then you enhance it. You can speak of "making pictures" if you are speaking of film-making.

But its not used that often, its perhaps more something my parents or grandparents would say, although I do use it sometimes. In England we nearly always say 'go to the cinema' and never say 'go to the movies' - I guess that's the American equivalent.
