Gary Mark Gilmore (born as Faye Robert Coffman, December 4, 1940) had a lifelong history of crime, incarceration, and instability before his notorious murders. After years of petty theft, burglary, and armed robbery, he was paroled from a federal prison in April 1976 and sent to live in Utah with relatives. Within months, he reverted to violence: on July 19, 1976, he robbed and shot gas station attendant Max Jensen in Orem, and on July 20 he robbed and murdered motel manager Bennie Bushnell in P
