Napier Sabre H24 - the engine that succeeded where the Rolls-Royce Vulture X24 did not. The output of Carbon Monoxide from the Sabre’s 24 cylinders was considerable, and the design of the Typhoon eventually necessitated that aircrew use oxygen at all times, even during ground ops. Sadly lives were lost before the CO issue was fully understood, but the Sabre was nonetheless a vital engine in UK aircraft development.
