The Wagner tuba, commissioned by and named after Richard Wagner, made its first appearance in symphonic music in Anton Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony in 1884. This distinctive, four-valve brass instrument is a hybrid of the standard tuba and French horn. Principal Horn Jennifer Montone and Associate Principal Horn Jeffrey Lang gave us a demonstration of how they work and explained what makes them so special! These Tubas are important as composers such as Bruckner, Stravinsky and of course, Wagner, wrote for these instruments. The Orchestra’s performance of Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony this Sunday will be the first opportunity to hear them here.
