Some Indigenous groups associate red aurora borealis with a sense of danger and foreboding, viewing the color as a bad omen of war, bloodshed, or restless spirits, while other traditions associate it with spiritual messages and the weather. For example, some believed the lights were the souls of slain enemies trying to rise again, or reflections of fires used by rival tribes to cook their enemies. Conversely, the Sámi and some other cultures see the red lights as a sign of calm, tranquil weather
