Not everyone knows this… but there’s a human-sized beehive in Devon you can actually stay in. Even fewer people know that if you travel to one of our spaces by public transport, we’ll give you a £75 Canopy & Stars Gift Card to use on a future stay. Getting to your holiday is where most of the carbon footprint comes from (around 70%, in fact), so we’re trying to make lower-carbon journeys a little more tempting. This cabin is less than a five-minute walk from Okehampton station, with

Did you know? There are around 20,000 described bee species worldwide and most of these are known as solitary bees. A common spring solitary bee species is the Early Mining Bee, with females active from April to July. They have a beautiful blood red tip to the abdomen and a covering of red hairs on its back. They can be spotted on fruit trees, as well as gardens, playgrounds, sports fields, paths and the sides of roads. Solitary bees love bee hotels, as they can crawl into this protected space a

🔊 Turn your sound on to hear this queen bee as she searches for the perfect hibernation spot 🐝 Each autumn, bumblebee nests naturally die off, including the old queen, males and female worker bees. Their mission during summer was to produce a new queen who will survive the winter and start a fresh colony the following spring. To make it through the cold months, new queens hibernate. This could be in rotting logs, beneath stones, or under thick layers of moss. Some will even dig down into the s

What is this beetle doing? Much like the cuckoo, the oil beetle relies on other animals to nurture its young (called a 'nest parasite'). This one is digging a burrow so it can lay up to 1,000 eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae will climb on to nearby flowers to hitch a ride on solitary bees. The young beetles will camp out in the bee's nest, feeding on eggs, nectar and pollen, and emerge as an adult to start the cycle again! Look out for these beetles on sunny, bare patches of ground 👀 #Amaz

Just after the beginning of autumn, I can already feel the colony becoming more defensive — their hive-guarding instinct is strong and fierce. Added an extra ring and feeding syrup to make sure the super has enough stores. Whether they can build up well for autumn and survive the winter now depends on the bees themselves. #bee #beehive #beehub #beebarton #beelover | Bee Bartons

Literally bee shit. You ate bee shit. Likely from a bee infected with parasites if it’s shitting like that.
