This radar image illustrates the type of precipitation currently prevailing as of 1 AM this morning, with the blue indicating the transition from rain to snow. This phenomenon is presently evident near the Hattiesburg area, but is rapidly advancing eastward and northeastward. Upon examining the southern region, temperatures continue to decline into the mid-30s as the upper atmospheric air cools, facilitating the transition from rain to snow. No accumulation is expected, with only a light dusting

Local radar has been showing several returns through the overnight and early this morning, but rain has been struggling to reach the ground, with many areas seeing no more than sprinkles. The resulting phenomenon is known as virga. Here is a video of some occurring near our office between 1-2 AM this morning. As this continues to occur, the air in the lower atmosphere will become more moist allowing heavier rain to reach the ground. | US National Weather Service Jackson Mississippi
